Water and Maine Coons

lesaristocoons

Maine Coons have a real fascination with water, which often leads to its share of "cooneries"! To limit the damage while respecting their love for water, here are some tips to put in place.

Water quality 💧

Water quality is essential for your cat's health. A good rule to follow: if you wouldn't drink this water, don't give it to your feline! Remember to change it at least every two days and wash its bowl regularly.

To improve water quality, choose bottled water, which limits the formation of algae compared to tap water. Using a pet fountain with a filter is also an excellent option. However, keep in mind that it requires regular maintenance: filling, cleaning and changing the filter according to the manufacturer's recommendations. A thorough cleaning every three weeks is recommended. If you don't have time for this maintenance, a classic water bowl remains the best solution! 🏺

Water games 🎭

Rather than having your cat play with his bowl and turn your home into a paddling pool, offer him supervised water play. Here are two simple, mess-free activities:

1. Surprises at sea 🌊

  • Materials: a baking sheet or rimmed tray, some plastic bottle caps, small treats and a water bottle.

  • Setup: Fill the plate with a little water, place the treats in the caps and let them float. Your cat will have to figure out how to catch his reward! 🐾

2. Fishing 🎣

  • Materials: floating toys or plastic fish, a large container (tub or bowl), and water.

  • Installation: Place the tray in the bath or on a ceramic floor, fill it with water and let your cat try to catch the toys. For more fun, you can move the toys by hand. 🐟

The location of the water 🏡

Choosing the location of the water source is crucial to avoid overflows.

  • Choose a ceramic floor or a silicone mat to collect splashes. 🏠

  • Avoid the sun , which warms the water and promotes the proliferation of bacteria. 🌞

  • Do not place water near the litter box : litter grains stuck to the paws could end up in the water, making the area less hygienic. 🚫

Accessibility to water 🚰

Your cat should always have access to a source of fresh water. Poor hydration can lead to urinary problems, especially in felines.

  • If your cat sleeps with you in a closed room, make sure a bowl of water is available nearby . 💤

  • In a multi-story house, it is recommended to provide a water point per floor . 🏡

  • Water should be placed in a frequented area. A bowl forgotten at the bottom of a basement risks being ignored by your cat… and by you for maintenance! 🚿

The toilet bowl: an unsuspected danger 🚽⚠️

Many cats are attracted to toilet water. However, this source is dangerous because of the chemicals used for cleaning. Definitely avoid slow-acting cleaners , which leave toxic residues.

Even if you are used to closing the lid, it only takes one forgetfulness for your cat to drink from it. In addition, some Maine Coons see the toilet as an improvised "swimming pool". The solution? Always close the lid ! 🔒

The choice of container 🥣

The type of bowl has a direct impact on the amount of water spilled!

  • Choose a heavy ceramic bowl , which is harder to move. 🏺

  • Choose a non-slip base to limit slipping. 🏠

  • Avoid cone-shaped bowls , which are too easy to tip over. ❌

  • A bowl that is 6 inches in diameter and 2-3 inches tall is ideal : big enough to drink comfortably, but not so big that it becomes a wading pool! 🌊

Fountains can also be a great option. Choose ones with a good capacity, but which do not give too much access to the water, thus limiting improvised water games. 💦

By following these tips, you can meet your Maine Coon's hydration and play needs while keeping your home dry! 🏡🐱💙
