Stress of Moving

lesaristocoons

Moving is a significant source of stress for cats, as they are animals that are very attached to their territory and routines. This stress can lead to a decrease in the effectiveness of their immune system, making them more vulnerable to illnesses, digestive issues, and behavioral changes such as inappropriate elimination, aggression, or apathy. It is therefore essential to take precautions to minimize their anxiety and ensure a smooth transition to their new home.

Preparation of the Moving Process

Before the move, it is recommended to gradually get the cat used to the boxes and environmental changes by leaving these new objects available for them to explore at their own pace. This part should be done by your breeder.

On your part, there are several steps you can take to reduce the stress of moving for your new kitten.

Start by setting up a quarantine room. Your kitten will need an isolated space to both reassure them and prevent any potential health issues from spreading to the rest of your family. When selecting the room, choose a small one that is still close to the action of the household, allowing your kitten to familiarize itself with the sounds of your home. However, this room should not be a favorite space for your other pets. For example, if your pets are accustomed to sleeping in your bedroom, this room should not be used for the new kitten’s quarantine, as it is a safe space for your existing pets.

A small room is preferable for isolation, as cats are territorial animals. By keeping their space limited, they will feel a sense of “control” over their new environment.

In this room, make sure to include everything your kitten will need:

  • Toys

  • Litter box

  • Water

  • Bed

  • Blankets

  • Food

Consider asking your breeder about your kitten’s favorite toys and beds to ensure they feel at home with familiar accessories.

Using a calming pheromone diffuser, such as Feliway-type pheromones, can help reduce its anxiety by recreating a reassuring atmosphere.

During Transportation

During transportation, a comfortable and secure carrier is essential. Placing a cloth with their scent or a familiar blanket inside can comfort them.

The Arrival Home and the Begining of the Isolation time

Once you arrive at the new home, it is advisable not to give them immediate access to the entire space but instead settle them into a dedicated room where they can find their usual items. This will allow them to gradually adjust to the new smells and sounds.

Routine is Key

Routine is a key factor in reassuring a cat: keep their usual meal, play, and cuddle times as consistent as possible.

Nutrition Advice:

  • It is recommended to maintain your kitten’s previous diet for at least three months, unless your veterinarian advises otherwise.

  • Make sure the litter box is not too close to the food area, as no one likes to eat near a - bathroom, and cats feel the same way!

  • If you wish to give your kitten treats, we suggest offering them Gastrointestinal veterinary treats, which help support their digestive health while giving them a tasty snack.

  • Additionally, it’s a good idea to incorporate vitamins and supplements into your cat’s diet during this time. You can ask your breeder or veterinarian for their recommended supplements.

Speaking softly to your cat and offering secure hiding spots, such as boxes or high shelves, will help them feel safe.

Closely monitoring their behavior and appetite after the move is essential. A prolonged loss of appetite, excessive grooming, or signs of isolation should be taken seriously and may require a visit to the vet.
